I am the adviser to a student organization know as VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood. This group had not existed on campus for quite some time and just somewhat fell into my lap when a student named Kristin came into my office one day.
Kristin, the (re)founder of Vox was a CARE (first generation) student when she came to Florida State. Every year, my department works with CARE and provides educational seminars on a range of health topics. I happened to present on sexual health for one of their assemblies which shes attended. Not long after, I had an appointment on the books with a Kristin for a consultation. Usually this is a one on one talk about birth control options, STIs, sexuality, etc. so once she sat down and just said she wanted to start a VOX chapter here because she saw a need, I was beyond elated. Since that day, a group of powerful, motivated, and inspirational women has been formed. I’m excited to see the future of these women and the change they can create.
“Vox®: Voices for Planned Parenthood is a national program to educate and mobilize college students in support of reproductive health and rights. Through Vox, college students across the country organize events on and off campus to raise public awareness about reproductive rights, educate young people about sexual health, work with and support their local Planned Parenthood health centers, and mobilize advocates of reproductive freedom.”
